Program

Charlie Sheldon, Director of the Port of Bellingham.  Charlie spent early career fishing on East Coast, then working at ports at New York, Seattle and now Bellingham.

Charlie covered the airport's history:  In the 90's very few flights, but since then the growth has been phenomenal. 480,000 "enplanements" last year (a 25% increase every year). The port recently repaved the runway, airport was closed over 30 days.  The airport accommodates commercial flights, private fleet and government planes/helicopters.  Phase 1 of the terminal was recently completed, much needed expansion and improvements, includes new restaurant (Scotty Browns), more parking, and storm water improvements. Phase 2 will be $16M expansion starting soon, more expansion, new baggage carousels, new bigger ticketing counters, ready in 2013.  Bids have just opened for that Phase 2 construction contract.

The future: Frontier airlines to Denver, interest by other airlines. Local community is a big economic engine for the county.  There have been and will be impacts (traffic / noise). Many Canadians use the airport, using Nexus pass, going to Las Vegas and Hawaii in particular.  Terry Brown (who's that?) of Zervas did much of the architectural design work. Expanding the security process to 4 lines.  The pre-bookings for the Denver (Frontier Air) flights have been very strong.  It is a seasonal experiment, but Frontier is optimistic it will continue.

Respectfully submitted,
Stowe Talbot
