Program

Bob Moles introduced Captain Wendy Lawrence, degrees from MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic INstitute. She received many honors from the Nanvy, in 1992 called by NASA for their space program, and is now a veteran of 4 space flights.

Wendy shared what it's like to go up in space and what research is going on. The space station is the length of a football field. Zero gravity environment on the station. Fluids and flames behave very differently in zero gravity. Mars flight? Would be a two years trip, so NASA is developing robots to do menial tasks. Concerns of humans in space: radiation damage to cells and DNA, loss of bone mass.  A goal is to learn how to live in space for long periods: Experiment how to grow plants in space. Human body is constantly under experimentation. Bone density tends to decrease over time in space. Astronauts need to excersize for bone and muscle health. Food in space typically dehydrated, need to be very careful with crumbs. Almost no fresh foods. Photos of the earth from space.

Respectfully submitted,
