Dennis introduced Alan Fox, who hiked the Appalachian Trail.  Alan showed a wonderful slideshow and shared some interesting facts about hiking the trail:

  • This trail is the longest continuous footpath in US.  It was started in 1920's as a volunteer effort to create it.
  • "Trail Angels" are volunteers who live along the trail who provide services and help to the hikers.  Some people actually open up their houses as hostels.
  • Hikers usually adopt nicknames; his was "Frost";
  • His pack weighed about 15-20 lbs.
  • He usually hiked by himself, but met many people along the way.
  • The total hike took him 5 or 6 months total.
  • Alan started his hike in mid-Feb, to see the winter aspect, less crowds early on.
  • It is legal to camp anywhere along the trail. He stayed about half the nights in hostels and half the nights under his tarp.
  • Towns along the trail actually cater to the through-hikers.
  • Average mileage was 12-15 per day during the winter, then over 25 miles/day when the weather improved.
  • His favorite part of trail was Virginia, NH and Vermont.
  • On a typical day you might see only 2 or 3 people, sometimes no one.
  • A "zero" is a full rest day/overnight off the trail, a "nero" is a half day off.
  • He is currently training to hike the Pacific Crest trail.

Respecfully submitted,
