Fellowship event: Terry Brown says May 24 is our annual lunch and golf day at Lake Padden; please let us know if you are coming, if you are only having lunch or golf too.

Mary Humpries says the International Service Committe's fabulous fundraising dinner is set for next Friday, May 20th 6:00 p.m. at Ciao Thyme Kitchen (207 Unity Street). Chefs Mataio Gillis, Ciao Thyme owner and Josh Silverman, Nimbus owner will prepare 5-course feast with wine pairings throughout!  Tickets $175/pp, checks payable to Bellingham Bay Rotary Club.  Money raised from the dinner will be used to support the Committee’s efforts to make clean water and sanitation available to the residents—especially the children—of the small town of Trojes, Honduras. The Committee’s current plans call for securing a total of $40,000 to install water filtration systems and latrines in Trojes and as with a previous Honduran project, the Bellingham Bay Rotary Club is expecting to collaborate with the Oak Harbor, Whatcom North and Sedro Woolley Clubs to bring this endeavor to a successful conclusion. Thus far $28,000 of the $40,000 required has been secured and our goal for the fundraising dinner is to raise $4,000 bringing us well within range of securing the $40,000 needed. Lack of clean water and sanitation are the leading causes of illness and death in third world countries and generally impact young, vulnerable children most.  "I want you to know how much we appreciate and are grateful for your support!" - Mary

Fines for miscellaneous trivia,

Program
Dennis introduced Claire Folgelsong (from City of Bellingham) and John Hutchins (Whatcom County Public Works) who talked about the Lake Whatcom Watershed programs.

Starting about 150 years ago, the area surrounding the lake was heavily logged.  Early in the 20th century Bellingham decided to use the lake as the source of its municipal drinking water.  As water quality started to decline, in 1992 the city started the LWMP (Lake Whatcom Management Program). Its goals include:

  1. manage water quality
  2. priority protection
  3. public commen
  4. research and learning

They have completed many projects over the last 18 years towards these goals.

2010 Capital Projects included:

  • bio filtration facility on Britton Rd
  • retention pond retro-fits
  • road improvements
  • stormwater infiltration soil studies

Also they are trying to incentivize stewardship for home-owners & property owners (pervious surfaces, stormwater retention, rain barrels, avoiding fertilizers, etc.)

Silver Beach Pilot Project:

  • capital projects in highest priority places in urban watershed;
  • demonstrate to homeowners the numerous incentives to stewardship;
  • measure reduction of fecal coliform and phosphorus.

TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) - pollution that the water body can take in and still meet water quality standards.

Respectfully submitted,
