Fellowship event: Terry Brown says next week (May 24) is our annual lunch and golf day at Lake Padden; please let us know if you are coming, if you are only having lunch or golf too.  NO LUNCH AT NORTHWOOD HALL NEXT WEEK!

Lesa Boxxs says the International Service Committe's fabulous fundraising dinner is set for this Friday, May 20th 6:00 p.m. at Ciao Thyme Kitchen (207 Unity Street). Chefs Mataio Gillis, Ciao Thyme owner and Josh Silverman, Nimbus owner will prepare 5-course feast with wine pairings throughout!  Tickets $175/pp, checks payable to Bellingham Bay Rotary Club.  Money raised from the dinner will be used to support the Committee’s efforts to make clean water and sanitation available to the residents—especially the children—of the small town of Trojes, Honduras.  This event only has a few tickets left!

Anna says Thursday July 7th at 6pm will be our club's 30-year anniversary celebration (and change of leadership), at the Bellingham Golf Club.  Incoming District Governor Jane Helton will be a guest.  Stay tuned for updates.  Also, two days later on July 9th, also at the BGCC, Incoming DG Jane Helton will have her own "installation party".

Anna asked if anyone would like to propose Christine Palmerton for incoming Program Chair:  Dennis moved, Bill Geyer seconded, all were in favor. Thank you, Christine!

Bucks in the Bay

  • Curtis Dye for missed meetings and recommends the downtown Radio Museum for both kids and adults; amazing Tesla coil!
  • Lance said on Friday he enjoyed interviewing the 12 Squalicum students for our scholarship program (together with Stephanie, Bob Becker, Leena K and Stan Dyer)
  • Leena K said her coworker from Neighborhood Mortgage, Annette Jensen, is battling cancer.  There will be a spaghetti fundraiser at noon on Saturday in Ferndale at Babe's Place to raise money for her treatment.
  • Mark Bergsma for missed meetings, also will be sending a camera around from table to table at upcoming meetings for us to shoot each other (on film).  Mark will then play around with the results (see Bryant's photo below)
  • John Templeton reported that he recently auctioned himself off as an "eligible bachelor" for a fundraiser and was purchased by a group of ladies for a tidy sum...

Sergeant at Arms by Bill Geyer
Fines for John Templeton, Dan Pike, "Small Business Week", Mark Bergsma, Christine Palmerton, trivia on Stanley Cup, convertible drivers, Barry's shorts, golfing in the rain.

 Program
Dennis introduced Jerry Philips, risk manager for Bank of the Pacific.  Jerry talked about all the current threats to security of your banking and personal information.  Many current examples of how crooks are inventing ever new ways to steal your money.  Every organization needs to find a balance between authority levels and the risk that entails.  Security risk weak points:

  • Malware / account take-overs
  • cell phone s
  • Debit cards
  • Physhing and ATM skimming

Best ways to prevent fraud? Be very careful with whom you share info, use only trusted websites, and tell the bank in advance when you travel abroad.

Respectfully submitted,
Stowe Talbot
