Student of the Month:  Aramis Johnson, councilor at Squalicum, introduced Madeline Vorenkamp.  He said Madeline is a great student, has done really extensive volunteer work, and next year will be attending San Diego University.

Brewers by the Bay tickets going on sale soon.  Each member responsible for selling 10 tickets.

International committee fundraising dinner: At Ciao Thyme space, 6pm on June 14th. Tickets $175 each. Details & online invitation coming soon.

Bill Geyer and the membership committee recommends four new applicants for membership.  Before they are approved, these names will be circulated in the Soundings for two weeks to solicit concerns or comments.  The four applicants are:

  • Jim Johnson talked about his productive trip to RI Convention in Bangkok, working with the United Nations and will even be going to NYC in November to give a talk at the UN;
  • Christine Palmerton for upcoming busy week, will be going to LA for casting call for "Shark Tank", and son has an appearance on a Nickelodeon TV show!
  • Mark Bergsma has really enjoyed and gained much from Rotary, and kind words for Anna's husband CB who passed recently;

  • Bryant Engebretson with some advice on the Facebook IPO;
  • Patti Imhof proud of daughter (Ashley Kimberley) and son in law (Steve's son), who started a hospital guild called Stillborn, Still Loved, (affiliated with Children's Hospital in Seattle); It's mission is to honor the lives of stillborn babies through advocacy, awareness and support. Program
Blaine Pedlow is executive director of the Community Boating Center in Fairhaven.  Blaine graduated from Sehome HS, university in California, then spent several years coaching college sailing programs (notably the Merchant Marine Academy) before settling in Bellingham.  The Community Boating Center was founded six years ago.  The CBC has a fleet of small boats, organizes instruction, youth' camps, and group trips, and community outreach and education.  The vision:
1. programming and outreach;
2. youth instruction;
3. sailing program;
4. practical enviro science instruction, together with public schools;
5. fundraising to build the fleet!  (which currently is a few sailboats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards).
