Steve Brummel introduced WWU Assistant Professor Adriana Manago. She is a cultural development psychologist. Her talk was entitled "Social media and its impact on social development: What is internet doing to teens, and what are teens doing to the internet?"
Old Media: Big organizations and companies decided what are tastes are and what we want…
New Media: Puts more power into hands of individuals, creating their own products, tailoring their own media environments, gossip as entertainment.
Self-expression more important to the new generation. 95% adolescents/teens are online! 2-5 hours /day. Both private (chat) and public (posting). Peer communications are shifting:
1) face to face becoming more technology mediated;
2) limited social circles to expansive circles;
Customized sociality: accessibility, asynchronicity (time lag), anonymity.
Opportunities (social support, intimacy development, bridging social capital)
Risks (risk taking / instant gratification, popularity and image, cyberbullying)
Cyberbullying (15-40% report abuse) is defined as "systematic harm to your reputation".
