Program

Bill introduced the new music director for the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (WSO), Dr. Yaniv Attar.  A native of Israel, Maestro Attar is the 1st prize winner of the Duna Szimfonikus Conducting Competition Budapest, the recipient of the 2010/2012 Georg Solti Foundation Award in Chicago and the 2009 Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation Award in New York.   Yaniv recently completed his two years residency as the Assistant Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.  Yaniv moved to Bellingham with his wife Meredith and three-year-old son this summer from Birmingham, Alabama.  Yaniv’s website is www.YanivAttar.com.

In 2008, Yaniv earned his Doctor of Music degree from McGill University.  He has been a frequent guest conductor for performing ensembles and the symphony at McGill.  Yaniv has also worked with the Cincinnati Symphony, Duna Szimfonikus Budapest, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Haifa Symphony, Israel Chamber Orchestra, and many other orchestras.  In addition to being a distinguished conductor, Attar is also an accomplished classical guitarist since his youth.

What is it like conducting?  Composers leave their masterpieces with the conductors to interpret, with room for the conductor to bring their own artistry into the interpretation.  Tempo, style, etc.  How is it coming to Bellingham to a volunteer, community orchestra?  He has to work harder with non-professions, but feels the musicians are more energized by the music and get joy from the music compared to the professional musicians.

Respectfully Submitted,

Stowe Talbot
